We are 10 Māori young women attending boarding school at Hato Hōhepa (St Joseph’s Māori Boarding School). We come from many different iwi and hapu (tribes and families) across Aotearoa. These are our experiences attending a Māori girls’ boarding school.

Our research method was based on photoyarn, but incorporated hui rather than yarning circles. Kōrero, and kanohi ki te kanohi formed the basis of our method (talking, face to face). We also used paper journals to write our ideas and thoughts on boarding between the visits Jessa made to stay with us at school, as our boarding school does not allow mobile phones or use of social media. We called our method kōreropikitia (phototalk).
